Authority is a 1958 book by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones which discusses the authority that Christians have. 

Lloyd-Jones explains that the average man feels that there is no such thing as ‘objective authority’. However, Christians do have an authority with which we can speak the truth to an ever-changing world, and this authority comes from:

• The Authority of Jesus Christ

• The Authority of the Scriptures

• The Authority of the Holy Spirit

Of Christ’s authority, Lloyd-Jones writes:

"We assert him, we proclaim him, we start with him, because he is the ultimate and the final Authority. We start with the fact of Jesus Christ, because he is really at the centre of the whole of our position and the whole of our case rests on him." - p. 5

Of the Scriptures’ authority, Lloyd-Jones writes:

"We must emphasize… the importance of holding on to the authority of Scripture and believing these doctrines because Scripture teaches them, rather than to change our position constantly as the world and the superficial condition of man seem to change." - p. 37

Of the Holy Spirit’s authority, Lloyd-Jones writes:

"Without the work and authority and power of the Holy Spirit there would never be a single believer in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." - p. 74

The book encourages believers to remember that we truly are standing on firm, solid ground, and because our salvation and worldview are built on the Eternal Rock of Ages, we shall never be moved.
